Brackenrigg
is a beautiful place, in a stunning location….and we recognise our
responsibility to operate all aspects of our business in an environmentally
responsible manner.
We have
achieved a Silver Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme,
and piloted the new Biodiversity Award sponsored by Natural England

our new wildlife page here!
This is what we do now,
and are planning for the near future:
* We recycle glass, paper, cardboard, metals, plastic and compost
kitchen vegetable matter.
*We use environmentally-friendly cleaning & laundry products, and
provide these for you to use.
*We use low energy light bulbs and other energy saving devices where
appropriate. We buy Green electricity.
*Our cottages have loft insulation, and are double-glazed throughout.
High Rigg has cavity wall insulation.
*We monitor the heating, to ensure plentiful warmth & comfort without
waste.
*We reuse
materials as much as possible eg old wardrobes for raised beds in
the polytunnel, old cd's as bird scarers, old sheets for dust sheets
etc
*We have planted 500 willow trees, to provide fuel and as a major
carbon off-set. We intend to plant many more …. And, in time, to
offer our guests willow-weaving!
*For those who wish to minimise car use, we can help you with cycle
hire (with a secure bike store on site) & routes, bus timetables
and, of course, wonderful walks straight from the door.
*We have
installed bird nesting boxes and feed both the birds and red squirrels.
And monitor carefully for encroachment by grey squirrels.

*We will encourage
more insects with a new bee and butterfly border, a wildflower meadow,
and bug hotel in the woodland all planned for this Spring (2009).
*It is our
intention to install a biomass boiler, using carbon-neutral wood from
the valley in which we live.
*It is also our intention to offer guests a ”plant-a-tree” scheme, whereby
you can choose a native species (eg ash, oak, hazel, holly) to be planted
in the delightful woodland here at Brackenrigg. This can be linked to
carbon off-setting your journey here, or you can simply ask us to plant
one for you anyway! (2009)
*We offer our guests the chance to pre-order a very wide range of exceptionally
high-quality local meats, game and barbeque specialities, thus minimising
“food miles”, and supporting good farming practice.
*We support national
& local environmental and wildlife initiatives including The Green
Tourism Business Scheme, Lake District Tourism & Conservation Partnership,
'Save Our Squirrels' and RSPB
