location

Location is everything and Brackenrigg Holiday Cottages is delightfully situated in the very heart of the Lake District National Park, only two miles from Keswick and ten minutes' drive from Grasmere. Penrith railway station is 13miles away, with bus links to Keswick. We have a regular bus service past the door and are on the stagecoach service from Lancaster to Carlisle. Car hire is available from Carlisle. You can walk the fells from the door, or be in Borrowdale, Ullswater or the Langdales after only a short drive. Thirlmere lake is within 2 miles, and Derwent Water foreshore just 3 miles away. (the Lodore Falls Spa is at the end of Derwent Water - just 15mins away)

Directions
Coming North by road, you have a choice. You can either leave the M6 at Jn 36, and travel up through the Lake District, or leave at Jn 40 and avoid it. In our experience, there is little difference in terms of the time it takes - it's about 45 mins from Jn 36, whether you come off the motorway there or stay on & exit at Jn 40 (unless you are travelling at a busy time of day, in which case the route thro' the lakes can take a little longer). The road thro' the Lakes meanders around a few bends in places (which children may or may not appreciate), but does offer some lovely views (except, of course, at night!). Coming from the North leave the M6 at JN40. From the East, also join these directions at the junction with the M6 at Penrith.

FROM M6 JN 36
Follow signs for Windermere, then Ambleside and Keswick. After Ambleside, you'll pass Grasmere, and rise up a long hill (Dunmail Raise, which marks the border between Westmorland & Cumberland). It's about 10 minutes from here. After descending the other side of Dunmail Raise, you'll drive along the Eastern shore of Thirlmere, and then pass a long white pub on your right, The King's Head. Two-and-a-half miles to go. There's a short stretch of dual-carriageway, a mile or so after which you'll see "Brackenrigg", a white house and barn, set back from the road on your left.

FROM M6 JN 40
Follow signs for Keswick, along the A66. For most of the journey, the spectacular sight of "Blencathra" dominates the view. After about 15 miles, there's a turn-off for Keswick & Windermere, A591. (Avoid the temptation to take the much earlier turn-off to Windermere). After a few hundred yards, you'll reach a "T" junction. Keswick is down the hill to your right, but you need to turn left up the hill towards Windermere. "Brackenrigg" is about 2.5 miles along here. You'll pass a large roadside farm on your right, Dale Bottom farm & caravan site on your left, and then "Brackenrigg" will appear through some trees on the right. The first gate (white, 5-bar) is permanently closed, the entrance is 60 yards further on.
